Chiarascuro in Year 4

Last week Year 4 continued their Art and Design project on Faces. This time around they were exploring the concept of chiarascuro- the practice of showing extreme contrast in light and dark.

We began by analysing and comparing the work of Joseph Wright of Derby with Caravaggio, both masters of this style.

 

Students took their own photographs in an impromptu studio inspired by the artists.

Using chalk and charcoal, they began work on their own portraits.

The students were thrilled with their results.
