Year 2 begin their science investigation

In Year 2 we have planted some seeds this week, hoping to answer our enquiry question- "Do plants grow healthier in the dark or light?" We have reminded ourselves of the word variable- so we have decided that the only thing we can change in our investigation is the amount of light our seeds get. Every day they will be watered the exact same amount, the amount of seeds in each pot was kept the same, as well as the size of pot and amount of soil they were planted in- these variables will not change.

Hygiene investigation in Year 2

Today for science we continued our learning into humans! This time we carried out an investigation to see just how far germs can spread.
We found out that germs are invisible to the human eye and can spread when we don't keep our bodies clean and healthy. We mimicked the effect of spreading germs by mixing dried herbs with hand cream and gave each other high fives and handshakes and "sneezing" onto tables and carpets.
We have decided to follow NHS guidance and wash our hands for twenty seconds at a time using soap and water- enough time to sing "Happy Birthday" twice.

What is this?

This morning Mrs Islam found this on her desk...

Is it snow?

Is it a flower? Or is it a cake?

We have left it in Nursery and we'll check again on Monday.

Do you know what it is?

Fabric testing in Year 2

Our science enquiry has been building up to this final question: What would be the best material to use for making an umbrella?

Over the course of the half term we have tested every material we could get our hands on, including metals, woods, paper, card, fabric, glass and plastic. We have found out about the difference between human-made and natural materials and explored how they are used, all building up to this moment! We found that human-made materials are very strong and mostly waterproof, so we have settled on our final answer as nylon.

Well done Year 2, you have proved yourselves to be promising young scientists!

Comparing brick and stone- Science in Year 2

Today in year 2 we carried out a science investigation into rock and brick, by comparing the two materials and looking at which are used in the real world to build houses.

When we returned to the classroom we made predictions about which would be the most suitable for building with- human-made bricks or natural stones, before working in teams to construct walls and compare how suitable they were for the job.
