Year 1 Science: An Umbrella for Wendy Whale

In Science, year 1 have been learning about everyday materials.

We have looked at different types of materials and their properties.

Some of the materials we have looked at are; wood, glass, plastic, metal, rock, fabric and rubber. We compared the materials and considered why they are used for the things they are used for in everyday life.

Everyday materials have a variety of properties and we learned vocabulary to describe and compare them.

EXPERIMENT

An umbrella for Wendy Whale

Wendy Whale loves to play outside but really doesn't like to get wet.

She asked the children to make an umbrella to protect her from the rain.

The children had a think about the main purpose of an umbrella

"To keep you dry in the rain"......

and which materials an umbrella could be made out of.

The following materials were tested to see how waterproof they are.

Before the experiment took place, the children made their own predictions about which material would be waterproof.

Hessian

Felt

A school jumper

Lycra

Plastic

After the experiment, the children discussed their predictions and whether what they thought would happen actually did.

Children learned about making predictions, how to make the experiment fair, how to observe changes during an experiment, how to record the results of an experiment and how to make a conclusion (compare their predictions to the results).

The children concluded that plastic would be the best material for Wendy's umbrella because it is waterproof and it is lightweight.

Wendy Whale was very happy with the final results!!
